And neither liked each other while active, but made amends later in life.

And when Adams died, his reported last words were “At least Thomas Jefferson still survives.”

I’m reading a book that mentioned that (Presidential Courage by Michael Beschloss) for school. It’s a really good book.

With school starting one month from yesterday... Gotta get reading!

If you have any interest in presidential history, I strongly recommend David McCullough’s remarkable biography of John Adams. He may well have been the greatest American who ever lived. As I got near the end of the book, I didn’t want Adams to die. He, and his wife Abigail, were just such amazing people that you wish they cold live forever.

If you really want spooky, here are some similarities between presidents Lincoln and Kennedy.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846, John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.

Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both were shot in the head.

Lincoln was shot in Ford’s theatre, Kennedy was shot in a Lincoln, made by Ford.

Lincoln’s secretary, Kennedy, warned him not to go to the theatre. Kennedy’s secretary, Lincoln, warned him not to go to Dallas.

Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners.

Both successors were named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.

Both names are comprised of fifteen letters.

Booth ran from the theater and was caught in a warehouse. Oswald ran from a warehouse and was caught in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

It’s an interesting book (Presidential Courage) but it takes a long time to read. Plus, after I finish this book, which will be a few more days, I have two more (for another class). School is gonna be a whole lot more busy than last year, so I don’t know how I’ll be on time, but thank you for the recommendation.

My wife loves that book. She did her thesis on “the impact of illness on presidential poilcy” and that was one of her goto books.

On July 4, 1826, at the age of 90, Adams lay on his deathbed while the country celebrated Independence Day. His last words were “Thomas Jefferson still survives.” He was mistaken: Jefferson had died five hours earlier at Monticello at the age of 82.
